One of the books we’re most excited about this season is “The Gilded Age on Syracuse’s James Street,” by Dennis J. Connors. The book takes readers back in time and beyond the doors of some of the mansions that defined the city during the the late 19th and early 20th Century. These homes housed the city’s political and cultural elite and hosted events with author Henry James as well as President Ulysses S. Grant. An invaluable resource for those interested in Syracuse’s history and an ideal gift, “The Gilded Age on Syracuse’s James Street” is filled with photos and stories, returning this lost moment in the city’s history to life.
“The House of the Edrisis: Volume Two” finishes this iconic classic of Persian literature, telling the complete story of Ghazaleh Alizadeh’s darkly comic house of revolutionaries and families, as a fading manor dissolves into a haunted and haunting representation of a larger madness. The release of volume two marks the first English translation of the beloved novel, bringing Alizadeh’s sharp humor and observations to a wider audience for the first time.
John McGahern’s 1965 masterpiece, “The Dark,” has been long out of print in the United States. “The Dark: A Critical Edition” reintroduces the novel to a new generation, complete with exhaustive footnotes and four essays, providing context and detailing the novel’s controversial history. With additional resources, “The Dark: A Critical Edition” highlights the lyricism, cutting social critiques, and enduring power of this brutal Irish literary classic.
