The first history of the German drama in New York playhouses from 1894 to 1965. The author examines each major movement of the German theatre, comparing the important plays produced in English with their German texts. He devotes attention to the critical, scholarly, and commercial reception of these plays and discusses their relationship to American drama. An appendix lists pertinent available production information of all recorded plays of Germanic origin that appeared in New York during this time period.
