"Helen Barolini, a novelist and poet, has pulled together these disparate parts—prose and poetry, one play, some oral history and a good deal of fiction—and introduced them with a cogent essay about the barriers to Italian-American women writers, within their own ethnic tradition as well as within the world of publishing."—The New York Times Book Review
"Barolini's powerful introduction, exploding the silence of Italian American women writers, is an impassioned and magnificent contribution . . . It is a book of heroic recovery and affirmation."—Alice Walker
