Peer Review Procedure

All books considered for publication under the Syracuse University Press imprint are peer reviewed, and all peer reviewed projects are evaluated by the Press’s faculty editorial board. Only projects approved by the board are published.

SU Press practices single-anonymous peer review, in which the author does not know the identity of the peer reviewers, while the peer reviewers do know the identity of the author. The peer reviewers remain anonymous unless they elect to reveal their identities.

All manuscripts under consideration for the Syracuse University Press imprint are sent to at least two reviewers who are credentialed experts in the subject(s) addressed in the manuscript. Expertise is evaluated in terms of relevant scholarly publications, advanced degrees in relevant fields, and extensive engagement with the scholarship in relevant fields.

If the reviews are positive and the Press has judged the project to be feasible, the project goes to the faculty editorial board for approval. Upon approval, the project is accepted for publication.

If the reviews are mixed, the Press may either reject the project or request revisions, with the revised manuscript being evaluated by at least one reviewer. This reviewer may be one of the two scholars who evaluated the project in the previous round or may be a third individual.

If the reviews are negative, the project is rejected.

When proposals go through peer review, they are generally sent to one expert in the field. A proposal review does not replace a review of the entire manuscript. All manuscripts must be reviewed by at least two qualified experts.
