Syracuse University Press Statement on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Syracuse University Press’ mission is to serve scholars and readers by publishing excellent, soundly researched scholarship, as well as beautifully written and elegantly translated creative works. To fulfill this mission, we must be a trustworthy steward for the scholarship and creativity of our authors. As such, we prioritize protecting their intellectual property rights. This commitment includes preventing to the extent possible the unauthorized use of SU Press content by generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) systems that do not respect copyright law or the integrity and human authorship of that content. Nor do we knowingly use materials generated from generative AI systems that do not respect copyright law or the integrity of the creators’ works in our publications.

Our commitment also centers the integrity and intentions of our authors in any engagement with generative AI within the framework of United States copyright law. We strive as a publisher to make our authors’ works as widely available and easily discoverable as possible, and we do so in service to the authors and rightsholders who have entrusted us with their works, and the networks of scholars and readers who draw on those works to enhance their own creativity and research. Our aim is always to uphold the integrity of the scholarly record and the unique value of human creativity in the substance and the design of our publications.

Press staff does not use generative AI or AI-assisted technology to evaluate proposals or manuscripts for publication. In addition, the Press mandates that all proposals, manuscripts, peer review reports, and evaluations by series editors and staff be kept confidential among Press staff and those directly involved in the evaluation process, and prohibits such individuals from uploading proposals, manuscripts, peer review reports, and evaluations to generative AI systems, including those licensed for enterprise use.

In light of rapid technological change and emerging best practices among scholars and publishers, the Press will revisit this policy regularly. We welcome conversations with our authors and other publishing partners on these issues.

Guidelines for copyeditors, proofreaders, indexers, and compositors

We recognize that AI-assisted tools are now embedded in many word processors and design editing software and that these tools can make some editorial and production tasks faster and more efficient. However, uploading Syracuse University Press content to any generative AI system is expressly forbidden. Use of licensed AI-assisted tools that do not gather data to train generative AI systems must be disclosed prior to performing work for the Press and may only proceed with permission of the Press. The use of generative AI to create text or graphics in or for Press content is not acceptable.
